EZpass: singlehandedly making toll roads suck slightly less since... whenever?
I know that occasionally when I head down to Boston with my family, we pass under a high-speed version of the EZpass that basically says “go 55mph and don’t you dare stop”

I’m just worried that those overhead toll gantries are gonna be put to use as average speed cameras.

That was always the concern like 15 years ago when ezpass first started. But it hasn’t seemed to ever become a thing. Speed through the booth is actually tracked though. I recall getting a warning letter from ezpass for going 25 through a 15mph toll booth. I thought that was laughable though since I’ve regularly seen others go through those at 60+. I’ve also made it a point to actually slow down since it’s sketchy to fly through those.

21st Century solution: instead of slapping us with speeding fines, charge a few extra cents per mile(s) over the speed limit per gantry passed. Pay to play, baby.

My dad worked at Gillette in Boston during the Big Dig, and as a repayment for digging up their entire parking lot, they gave all the employees the first ez-passes. So in the early days he was allowed to fly through the empty tunnels bypassing all traffic in the city. His pass number is only two digits, which is an interesting problem when he renews it.

MA got rid of all their booths. There’s gantries between exits now that you drive through at full speed and you get charged 50¢ or so for each one you pass through. If you don’t have a transponder it takes a picture of your plate and mails you a bill.
That tech could very easily be used as an average speed camera.

Luckily the ones on the border of PA and NJ haven’t been used as such yet.
